We are almost halfway through 2021. What steps have you taken to get closer to the goals you set earlier this year?
For anyone that’s followed me for a while, you probably already know that I’m a big fan of accountability. I think accountability is the next big when it comes to personal development. In my experience, personal development has always come down to two aspects.
First is setting big audacious goals and then chunking those goals down into manageable pieces.
The second is creating habits that will move you in a positive forward direction in your journey.
I believe accountability is the key that helps you start and stick to those habits to follow through on those big audacious goals.
Holding Yourself Accountable
So, what does accountability really mean? It means having somebody that you check in with regularly. You discuss your goals, the steps you’re taking toward those goals, your progress, and what you’re planning to do next. We have always found that people in the Harbour Club community do more deals when they have an accountability partner that they actively engage with.
Recently, we decided to do a little experiment.
We gave all the Harbour Club delegates who had finished the course an accountability partner to act as a mentor. Once a week, everyone in the group jumped on a zoom call, and they would share their progress and their next steps. The idea is to be transparent and engage with the group to be accountable to yourself and each other.
This was a 12-week program that we offered to everyone in the Harbour Club. Not everyone participated, but what was fascinating was 50% of the delegates that did participate and remained accountable took massive steps toward their goals. We have more term sheets out then can be counted, and we’ve got loads of companies now in due diligence. All in all, in the first eight weeks, the delegates that participated closed ten complete deals. It’s really quite incredible!
On the other hand, I also spoke to a member of the Harbour Cub yesterday who just did his first deal. It was almost one year to the day that he finished the Harbour Club course. So, as you can see, some people get deals very quickly, and some people take a little bit longer. There’s no typical timeline, but what was fascinating is that those who utilized the accountability experiment could do so many deals in such a short amount of time.
Interestingly, one deal was in Australia, one was in Italy, a few in the U.K., and one in the U.S. They were spread out worldwide, and all were deals that were done without any cash up front and without borrowing money from banks. It’s gratifying to hear our methods are working for our members.
The experiment worked so well that we created groups within the Harbour Club app. They are like communities for all the Harbour Club delegates. They can join groups based on their location, a particular industry, or a specific deal structure. Now our members can support and be accountable to each other through the groups within the app.
Emerging Trends
Recently, I noticed a new group in the app that’s been very involved and nailing all of their deals. What was surprising and exciting was that it’s an all-women’s group. In a previous blog, I touched on why I think more women should be doing deals, and this was very encouraging to see how active these women were in the community.
Now, if you look at the overall population of membership, we’re quite light on women. I don’t know why that is, but the ladies coming to the course are smashing it and doing some fantastic deals. They have all been quite active in their groups’ accountability aspect, and it’s incredible to see female members supporting each other.
Ask yourself, would adding some accountability to whatever you’re doing help you reach your goals? Consider having a check-in with somebody once a week to tell them what your next steps are towards those habits that take you towards those goals. It seems to be having a hugely powerful impact on people doing deals.
I believe these accountability groups have seen so much success in the Harbour Club because everyone in the group has a common mission—to do deals—and everyone wants to see everyone succeed. It’s raining deals at the moment, and if you’re interested in getting in on the action, for more information on how you can go do deals.
